The most recent addition, Summer Update Wave 2, has brought back a classic Animal Crossing feature that many players have been longing for. First introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Luna and her Dream Suite allowed players to upload fixed versions of their villages as dreams, and visit the dreams of others. While the Dream Suite itself has been replaced by simply sleeping, Luna is back in New Horizons to once again guide players on their dream journeys.

Into the land of Dreams

As expected from a group as active as Animal Crossing’s community, Reddit threads and Twitter Hashtags are already filling up with dreams to visit. The flexibility of Nintendo’s island-customization system and the imagination of its fans has led to some truly impressive creations.

While many of these dream islands are simply well-crafted, others have dedicated themselves to a particular theme. Themed islands have been around as long as the Animal Crossing series itself, and Luna lets players share these weird and wonderful creations like never before. For those who are looking to visit some truly unique islands, here’s our breakdown of some of the best themed dream addresses on offer.

Fantastic Villagers and Where to Find them

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that there’s some overlap between the Harry Potter and Animal Crossing fandoms, and sure enough there are already several HP-themed dreams popping up. This one, posted on twitter by @acnholly, features Diagon Alley, a Quidditch Pitch, and bedrooms for each of the Hogwarts houses. Head left from the Plaza to begin the magical journey, before following the train-tracks up to Hogwarts.

The Lord of the Bells

Capturing the epic scope and sweeping vistas of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings on a New Horizons island was never going to be easy, but somehow Redditor u/MochiCatHunter has pulled it off. Highlights include the Black Gates of Mordor, Bag-End, and Lothlorien. Visiting players should throw on an elven cloak to keep out the chill of the Barrow-downs, and pack plenty of Lembas bread for the journey there and back again.

Ocarina of Time-Travelling

Taking inspiration from another of Nintendo’s classic titles, Twitter user @biancaegames has themed their dream island after The Legend of Zelda. Players can explore Link’s world freely, discovering fairy fountains, Hyrule castle, and adorable Korok suits. No one needs an Ocarina to time travel in New Horizons just yet, but it’s an interesting crossover nonetheless.

Straight to Davey-Nook’s Locker

No collection of themed destinations would be complete without a jaunt into the golden age of piracy. Twitter user @Skull_Isle has created an island fit for the saltiest of sea-dogs, complete with cannons, braziers, and plenty of skulls. Slap on an eyepatch and explore the forts, graveyards, and skeleton-haunted swamps of this pirate haven.

America’s Island

Twitter user @Ahnahleesa welcomes players to an island composed of all things American. While all the red, white, and blue may cause visitors to assume they’ve stumbled their way into a 4th of July parade, this island is actually based on Marvel’s Captain America. Highlights include the gigantic floral recreation of Cap’s shield, the stall that shows off Iron Man’s suit, and a cozy, patriotic cafe for those visitors in need of refreshment.

More Gulliver than Grimm

Instead of being themed after a particular universe, this fairy-tale island from @dramaticmanic is pulled directly from European folklore. Players ready for a whimsical adventure can wander the twisting pathways of the mushroom forest, chase butterflies through the meadows, and kiss as many frogs as they want beside the lily pond.

The Hamphrey-est place on Earth

With the Coronavirus pandemic trapping much of the world inside over the past few months, there have been very few opportunities for visiting tourist attractions. Fortunately, @NicoleEatWorld has lovingly crafted a dream island based on probably the most famous theme park of all: Disneyland. Players who are looking to take a vacation with their Animal Crossing character that they can’t take themselves will be able to explore the Ariel-themed beach, the tea-cup rides, and the outdoor chapel.

A Bunch o’ Nuts

Rounding out our journey through the best themed dream addresses in New Horizons is a rather unique creation from an anonymous player. The island, simply named Squirrel, is an exclusive home for Animal Crossing’s bushiest-tailed villagers. Visiting players will find that every consideration has been taken to ensure the relaxation of its rodent residents, including a squirrel-shaped lake, acorn ponds, and a neatly symmetrical layout.

It’s only been a few days since Wave 2 of the Summer Update launched, and already players are flocking to each others’ islands,  showing off their own handiwork. As more time passes, there’s little doubt that there won’t be New Horizons’ tools and assets stretched to their absolute limit by new and wonderful creations.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
