The Boys ended its third season on a spectacular cliffhanger. The Boys chose to have Homelander finally reveal his true inner self to the world, lasering a protestor’s head clean off his body, and as it turned out, the crowd surrounding Homelander loved it. The crowd consisted of people who were Homelander fans anyway, however, the wider reaction to Homelander’s actions has yet to be seen.

In an interview with Insider, showrunner Kripke talked about what the final scene will usher in for The Boys season 4. “It’s a hint of one of our big themes in season four, which is society as a whole is fracturing into these two factions, and no one’s listening to each other, and the threat of violence just gets worse and worse every day,” Kripke said. “It’s an appetizer of what all these superheroes are gonna be doing to society in season four.”

Though the satire has sometimes been missed - see Erin Moriarty having to comment on misogynistic treatment from The Boys fans - it’s a fairly obvious aspect of the show. Homelander represents a modern movement toward fascism and love toward some truly heinous public figures. His cold-blooded murder of one of the protestors, which received applause and cheers from his fans, shows the lack of awareness these people possess. They do not realize that Homelander is unhinged and that his murder victim could have easily been one of them. Instead, it’s about sticking it to people they dislike, to their own detriment.

The Boys is a TV show with lots of social commentaries. It’s a shame some do not look past the surface level to see that - again, see The Boys’ own showrunner telling misogynistic fans not to watch the show. Homelander is not a character to be admired, and Kripke understands that he has to be brought down by the end of the show if the message is to stick (and so that the ending is not irredeemably bleak).
