Jun Mochizuki’s manga follows the legend of the vampire Vanitas and vampire specialist Noé. Vanitas was born during a blue moon, which is cause for derision by his fellow vampires. This leaves him feeling very lonely and fearful. Vanitas pens a book entitled the “Book of Vanitas”, which is said to doom all vampires of the crimson moon. Cut to 19th Century Paris, Noé is currently searching for this book for his own reasons.

The first volume The Case Study of Vanitas debuted in December 2015 by Mochizuki in Gangan Joker magazine. Since then, the manga has amassed 10 collected volumes. The English translation of the manga is published by Yen Press.
The Case Study of Vanitas was also adapted into an anime last year. It ran for one season, consisting of 24 episodes. Vanitas was voiced by Natsuki Hanae, whose notable roles include Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer, Falco Grice in Attack on Titan and Takumi Aldini in Food Wars. Noé is played by Kaito Ishikawa, who may be recognized for voicing characters such as Tobio Kageyama in Haikyuu!!, Genos in One Punch Man and Tenya Iida in My Hero Academia.
The Case Study of Vanitas is not the only published work Mochizuki put out. In 2009, she illustrated and wrote a six-chapter one-shot entitled Crimson Shell; which was her first published project. Crimson Shell is a sci-fi adventure following Claudia the Rose Witch and the complicated twists around her friend Xeno in the backdrop of a crazy experiments and questioned loyalties. Her more famous work is Pandora Hearts, a manga following Oz Vessalius, a teenage boy who is imprisoned in the Abyss for a sin he knows nothing about. The manga ran for 24 volumes and was adapted into an anime, which spanned one season.
The length of the manga’s hiatus is yet to be confirmed. Gangan Joker magazine will announce its return on the publication’s official Twitter page.
